this paper argued that muslim scholars were the purveyors of modern research methods
as exemplified by the methodologies of hadith scholars and that of islamic jurist-consults. using the
historical method, the paper expatiated on the scientific methods adopted by hadith scholars in
scrutinizing hadith reporters and validating reports. the methodology of usul al-fiqh scholars,
which is scientifically developed to lay the basis for understanding the qur’an and sunnah, was also
explained. finally the paper highlighted the areas in which it felt that modern scientific research may
benefit from the two methodologies of hadith scholars and usuliyeen.
